POLYETHYLENE
Plastic packaging materials
Polyethylene foam: PE shapes are fabricated
from plank or sheet stock. In general, when used for
cushion packaging applications, PE foam is best suited
for products weighing 10 pounds or more, with fragility
(ruggedness) levels of between 20 and 100 g's.
The primary application for polyethylene foams is packaging
for electronics, computers, picture frames and retail
high end products. It can also be used for gym floors,
non abrasive packaging wrap, and military and automotive
specifications.
The
advantages of PE foam shapes are numerous. They offer
lightweight protection, and are more resilient and flexible
than EPS shapes. PE foams typically provide cushioning
at higher loadings than softer materials like polyurethane
foams, thus PE foam designs will usually require much
less material than will designs in softer materials.
PE foam is unaffected by most chemicals. It's easily
fabricated, which allows for design flexibility, and
is available with anti-static and fire-retardant additives.
