Plastic packaging materials
Polyurethane foam: PU foam shapes
are fabricated from large blocks of foam called buns.
The producer combines two chemical components to form
a urethane plastic foam. Most packaging grades are open-celled
foams with a high degree of flexibility and resiliency.
PU
foams come in a variety of grades and price ranges, as
well as variations of density and firmness, treatment
for static resistance and degree of flame retardance.
PU foam shapes are lightweight, very flexible and resilient,
and are considered to be well suited for packaging extremely
lightweight items.
There are two types of urethane foams. Polyester urethane
foams are usually stiffer and more expensive, with higher
load-bearing capability, while polyether urethane foams
are typically cheaper, softer and less abrasive.
Also, compared with other foam products, polyurethane is
perceived as less expensive because of its low cost per-board-foot
and multiple-impact protection.
